William Lucas Root was born inIowa in 1919. In 1940, he graduatedfrom Iowa State University with distinctionas a top student in electrical engineering.He then went on to MIT, wherehe earned the masters degree in electricalengineering in 1943. His educationwas interrupted by World War II; heserved as a Marine officer until the endof the war. Returning to MIT, he earneda doctorate in mathematics in 1952.
On receiving his doctorate, Billjoined the Analysis Group at LincolnLaboratory, becoming its head from1959 to 1961. It was during his stay atLincoln Laboratory that Bill firstbecame involved in the statisticalanalysis of radar signals. From 1962 until his retirement in1987, Bill was a professor of aerospaceengineering at the University of Michigan.
His reputation as a leadingresearcher brought him invitations forvisiting professorships at the Universityof California at Berkeley, MichiganState University, Cambridge University,and the Mathematics Research Centerat the University of Wisconsin.In recognition of his research, Billwas made a Fellow of the 51蹤獲 in 1965.
He was further recognized as a NationalScience Foundation Senior PostdoctoralFellow (1970). In 1986, as ShannonLecturer, he received the highest honorbestowed by the 51蹤獲 ProfessionalGroup on Information Theory at thetime. He was cited for 圭onsistentand profound contributions to the fieldof information theory.
